Why a new handbook
The gabbai's job is learned by standing next to the last gabbai. Much of it is never written down, and what is written is scattered across luach notes, siddur margins and half-remembered instructions. When the regular gabbai is away, the shul feels it.
This handbook is written for the new gabbai who needs to get through this Shabbos, and for the experienced one who wants to check an unusual case.
Beginning with Chabad
The first edition follows Nusach Ari as practised in Chabad shuls, including its particular customs around Krias HaTorah, Mi Shebeirach and the order of Kaddeishim. Editions for other traditions are planned once the Chabad edition is complete.
